Meet Our Founder

Rooted in Legacy. Guided by Purpose.

The Akamu Institute was founded by Victoria McDonald, an educator, wellness practitioner, and community leader whose work has been shaped by a lifelong commitment to healing, Hawaiian culture, and service.

The Institute takes its name from Victoria’s grandmother, Akamu, who was born in Waipiʻo Valley on Hawaiʻi Island. Her legacy serves as a reminder that knowledge, culture, and aloha are gifts entrusted to each generation to preserve and pass forward.

Now rooted on Kauaʻi, Victoria envisioned the Akamu Institute as more than a nonprofit—it is the beginning of a living community where education, cultural preservation, healing, and stewardship come together. The Institute seeks to create opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn from Hawaiian values, deepen their connection to the land, and participate in experiences that strengthen individuals, families, and communities.

Throughout her career, Victoria has devoted herself to bringing together diverse healing traditions and educational experiences. As the founder of Akamu Wellness, she has worked with thousands of clients and visitors through yoga, bodywork, coaching, retreats, and community events. Those experiences revealed a growing need for an organization dedicated not only to personal healing, but also to preserving cultural knowledge and creating lasting educational opportunities.

Today, that vision is growing into the Akamu Living Learning Center—a future home for Hawaiian cultural studies, healing education, regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and community gathering.

Victoria believes that healing is not only personal—it is cultural, environmental, and intergenerational. By caring for one another, honoring the wisdom of our kūpuna, and nurturing the places we call home, we help create a healthier future for generations to come.

“This work is an offering to those who came before us and a promise to those who will come after us.”

Me ke aloha,

Victoria McDonald

Akamu Institute

Akamu means more than a name. It represents our family’s roots in Waipiʻo Valley, the enduring wisdom of our ancestors, and the belief that healing begins with remembering where we come from.

Guided by our pueo ʻaumākua and inspired by the land and waters that connect the Hawaiian Islands, the Institute is dedicated to carrying this legacy forward with humility, aloha, and service.
